Lisa Etherson is a psychosexual therapist, trainer and doctoral researcher whose work focuses on shame, attachment and compulsive sexual behaviour. Drawing on extensive clinical experience and original research, she has developed Shame Containment Theory (SCT), a new framework for understanding shame as an attachment‑based protective process rather than a pathology to eradicate. Her work supports practitioners to recognise the central role of shame in clients’ lives and to work with it safely, compassionately and effectively.
Lisa is completing her PhD at Teesside University, where her qualitative research explores how shame is experienced, organised and defended against in the context of compulsive sexual behaviour and related difficulties.
